Vasiliy Lomachenko wants Navarrete, but Charly Suarez comes first

Reports suggest a Vasiliy Lomachenko Comeback could be edging closer to a return to professional boxing. However, Charly Suarez appears to be the man standing between him and a potential showdown with Emanuel Navarrete.

The former three-weight world champion has not fought since defeating George Kambosos Jr in May 2024. That victory saw Lomachenko reclaim world honours before seemingly stepping away from the sport.

Reports emerging this week indicate the Ukrainian great could be preparing for one final run at the top.

According to those reports, Charly Suarez has emerged as the leading candidate for Lomachenko’s comeback opponent who currently possesses a record of (18-0)

Vasiliy Lomachenko Comeback could lead to Navarrete

At first glance, the fight may seem an unusual choice.

Suarez is not a household name among casual boxing fans. However, he currently occupies a strong position at super-featherweight following his controversial clash with Emanuel Navarrete last year.

The pair met in May 2025 in a bout that ended in unusual circumstances. A cut above Navarrete’s eye forced the contest to be stopped before a clear conclusion was reached.

Initially, officials awarded Navarrete a technical decision victory. However, replay footage later showed that a Suarez punch had caused the cut rather than an accidental clash of heads.

The California State Athletic Commission overturned the result to a no contest. The WBO subsequently ordered a rematch.

Therefore, Suarez remains in a strong position within the division.

A victory over the unbeaten Filipino would immediately place Lomachenko back into the title picture. In addition, it could set up a blockbuster clash with Navarrete.

The Mexican champion has already indicated he would welcome the fight.

Speaking recently, Navarrete stated that if Lomachenko returns, he would have no issue focusing his attention on a fight with the former pound-for-pound king.

Given the achievements of both men and the styles they bring into the ring, it is a matchup that would undoubtedly capture the imagination of boxing fans.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the reports is what was not mentioned.

For years, fans have called for Lomachenko to face Gervonta “Tank” Davis in what many viewed as one of the biggest fights available below welterweight.

Yet despite continued speculation, there appears to have been little meaningful movement towards making that fight.

Now, Lomachenko seems focused on one final push towards world honours.

If the reports prove accurate, Charly Suarez could be the first obstacle standing between him and a showdown with Emanuel Navarrete.
