Tyson Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren is mystified by Deontay Wilder’s recent claims that his emphatic seven-round loss to the Gypsy King came via nefarious means.
Last week, Wilder launched a bemusing broadside at Fury via social media, claiming that the February defeat was a result of glove-tampering and previous trainer Mark Breland spiking his water.
It’s fair to say that Wilder has not taken his first defeat with good grace, having previously blamed an elaborate costume for being too heavy during his ring walk.
The Bronze Bomber was expected to face Fury in a contracted trilogy fight at the end of the year but the ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic and the American’s long-term bicep injury caused that fight to fall through.
Wilder believes he still has a binding contract, but the Fury side maintain that deal has now expired as the WBC heavyweight champion seems set to face German Agit Kabayel instead in London on December 5.
Warren quite reasonably says that any spiking would have shown up in the post-fight drug test as Wilder continues to wrestle with the fact that he was simply outclassed by a dominant Fury. Now the Hall of Fame promoter is looking forward to Fury’s proposed homecoming fight against Kabayel ahead of a two-fight series with unified champion Anthony Joshua in 2021.
“Deontay Wilder says his water was tampered with for his fight with Tyson Fury. I think maybe someone has spiked his drink more recently if this is what he now believes. Wilder must be on something after the load of excuses he came up with earlier this week,” Warren told The Daily Star.
“Gloves, disloyal trainer and something in his water? If there was something in the water then why didn’t it come up in his post-fight anti-doping test?
“I actually think the American is a nice guy and a really good fighter so it sad to see him come out with all of this. For now, we are moving on with Fury and we are hoping to have his clash with Agit Kabayel signed off soon for December 5.
“It will be fantastic to give the Gypsy King a huge homecoming fight even if it is behind closed doors should we get that fight over the line.”
