Canelo Alvarez caught the attention of many with his bulked-up physique before his fight against Gennady Golovkin back in September 2017, but officially he had no failed drug tests to his name at that time.
Things took a left turn last April when the Mexican superstar tested positive twice for clenbuterol, a banned substance.
After his failed test, Alvarez blamed contaminated Mexican meat and was handed a six-month suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The highly-anticipated May 5 rematch against Golovkin got scrapped, much to the dismay and outrage of boxing fans.
“I hope he’s learned a lesson, that he is responsible with what he puts in his body,” commission Chairman Anthony Marnell said. “And I hope to see him fighting in Nevada soon. If he follows the agreement as it’s laid out then he would be able to come back and fight like any other fighter.”
The suspended boxer recently posted a new photo of his trimmed down body. While Alvarez is clearly enjoying the off-season under the sun, fans have questioned Canelo’s change in physique.

As Canelo serves the suspension, his promoter Oscar De La Hoya and ‘GGG’s’ representative Tom Loeffler have both confirmed that talks are underway for the rematch to take place potentially on September 15.
