The news that Wayne Rooney was in talks to fight for Misfits Boxing broke yesterday, and the football legend has now broken his silence on the matter.
It was reported by The Mirror that Rooney had taken part in discussions about potentially fighting on one of the upcoming Misfits events, which is led by promoter Kalle Sauerland and has featured influencer boxers and celebrities such as KSI and Logan Paul.
Rooney has been a big fan of boxing from a young age, having walked out Ricky Hatton for his Las Vegas fight with Jose Luis Castillo back in 2007, whilst also being known to train alongside Liverpool’s Smith brothers.
After 24 hours of speculation, the Manchester United and England legend has now had his say on the matter, telling The Overlap that while there have been talks, it isn’t his main focus.
“You never know. They’ve been in touch and asked the question. I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.
They’ve been in touch to fight. There’s been a few and obviously that Misfits have been in and that’s been all over the news. Listen I want to focus on getting back into management, I’ve seen over the last couple of days all the headlines, but my main focus is getting back into football.”
It appears for now that Rooney won’t be stepping into the ring any time soon, but if no managerial jobs materialise, it appears it could definitely be a possibility.
