Boxing News Today: 2 Fighters Linked to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis Comeback, & The Future of American Boxing

In the latest boxing news today, Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis could return against one of two opponents.

The American puncher has not fought since a fortuitous draw he shared with compatriot, Lamont Roach Jr. He was linked with a crossover bout with Jake Paul later in 2025 but Most Valuable Promotions canceled the event when Davis’s civil and legal issues surrounding domestic violence came to light.

However, he could make a return to the ring in the summer.

Through speaking to numerous people close to the fighter through the years, one opponent who would help generate significant box office attention would be Golden Boy Promotions fighter, Ryan Garcia — particularly as KingRy now has the WBC welterweight championship in his possession.

However, Garcia does not appear to be in the running.

A rematch with Roach could be in play, according to some reports, however, Boxing Scene suggest Isaac Cruz is a preferred option.

Boxing Social had spoken to Cruz’s manager Sean Gibbons in recent years who was always lobbying for his fighter, Pitbull, to secure a rematch with Davis, having boxed him to a draw in 2021.

Now, it seems, they may finally get that shot.

Elsewhere, David Benavidez rises from light heavyweight to cruiserweight to challenge the unified champion, Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez in a high-stakes, all-Mexican shootout on the weekend closest to Cinco de Mayo in Las Vegas.

‘El Monstro’ epitomizes the warrior’s instinct as he continually seeks out the toughest challenges and has already built a formidable resume.

Benavidez told Boxing Social ahead of the fight that 200 pounds isn’t even the highest he could fight, as he “could definitely fight at heavyweight,” too, “just not now,” he said.

“I want to fight at light heavyweight,” he said. “I want to solidify myself as a great champion for a long time at 175. I want those fights for the fans, and myself. To solidify how good I am and can be, I have to beat Dmitry Bivol and Artur Beterbiev.”

Benavidez’s mindset and victories are a key part of why he’s been able to surge up the pound-for-pound rankings, alongside other US-based fighters like Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, and Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez.

Considering the exploits of his peers, and Top Rank finally securing a broadcast deal (with DAZN), it suggests American boxing is in a better place now than it has been in recent times.

“Young fighters are more willing to make fights happen with other great fighters,” Benavidez noted.

“We just had Shakur Stevenson beat Teofimo [Lopez],” he said. “Mario Barrios and Ryan Garcia.

Hopefully we can make all these super fights happen like we have already. I fit in with that,” Benavidez said. “I try to do the same thing. The state of boxing is competitive. Everyone knows what’s at stake.

I think Turki [Alalshikh] put this in as everyone knows there’s big purses. And you can’t get there unless you fight another great fighter. We now get those fights that fans want to see.
