Heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs) has delivered a scathing assessment of Deontay Wilder’s (42-1-1, 41 KOs) recent social media video, labelling the American a ‘coward and a disgrace’ for the way he has handled his defeat to Tyson Fury back in February.
Having been seemingly in the wilderness since surrendering his WBC World heavyweight title, Wilder made an unexpected return to the public eye this past weekend, posting a bizarre, excuse-laden video wherein he makes repeated allegations against Fury and his team.
From accusations of glove tampering, to claims that his own trainer spiked his water, Wilder’s astonishing statements have been largely condemned across the sport. Whyte, who repeatedly called for a bout with Wilder while occupying the WBC’s number one contender slot, is also less-than-impressed by the outburst.
“He’s a coward and a disgrace.” Whyte told SkySports.
“The behaviour he’s shown and the way he’s acted, blaming everyone apart from himself, getting rid of the only person in his corner who knows anything about boxing? It’s weird.”
Having removed ‘disloyal’ former trainer Mark Breland from his team following the defeat to Fury, Wilder has called on ‘The Gypsy King’ to fulfil his commitments to their trilogy bout.
However, with Fury looking set to return to the ring in the United Kingdom on December 5, it appears Wilder will have to wait for his shot at redemption.
Whyte is planning a revenge mission of his own when he takes on Russian danger man Alexander Povetkin in their November 21 rematch having been brutally knocked out in their first encounter back in August.
“I didn’t give one excuse after my defeat.” said Whyte.
“I went straight back into training and started working on what I did wrong.”
