Deontay Wilder’s trainer Malik Scott has weighed in on a potential clash between his charge and Joe Joyce, and admits the Brit is a tough night for any heavyweight on the planet.
Speaking to FightHype, Scott echoed the view of many observers that the mouth-watering match up would simply come down to whether Wilder’s right hand could overcome Joyce’s seemingly impregnable chin.
“If you can’t knock Joe Joyce out then it’s going to be very hard to beat him by a decision – because he just keeps coming.”
“I believe if there’s a man for the job, to see if he can handle that type of heat, then it’s Deontay Wilder because Deontay’s got the power factor – the equaliser.”
“Joyce has got a chin. The narrative now is becoming ‘just how good is his chin – I wonder if he can take Wilder’s power?’ But the question is – how many of those can he take?”
“Joe Joyce is a bad night for anyone – and if you can’t knock him out, then God be with you.”
With a career best win last time out over Joseph Parker, Joyce threw his name into the mix with the elite of the heavyweight division and discussions about fights with the likes of Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua have also sprung forward.
A meeting of Wilder’s unrivalled power and Joyce’s granite chin is perhaps the most intriguing of these fascinating heavyweight match ups in what is a golden era for the blue ribbon division.
Let’s hope we see at least some of these contests in 2023.
