Zhilei Zhang knocked out Deontay Wilder to cement a whitewash 10-0 victory for Queensberry over Matchroom during their 5 on 5 event.
Zhang dominated the action and dropped Wilder in the fifth round with a big shot, with the referee waving off the fight and handing ‘Big Bang’ the victory.
It wrapped up a blockbuster evening for Frank Warren and Queensberry Promotions, who won all five fights against Matchroom and Eddie Hearn, earning a 10-0 victory in the process.
Both Zhang and Wilder were coming off defeats to Joseph Parker heading into the fight, with Wilder’s occurring in December, while Zhang was beaten back in March.
It was a quiet start to the fight between the two heavyweight big hitters, but Zhang appeared to be landing the cleaner shots in the opening rounds.
Despite saying otherwise in the build-up, Wilder was once again unable to let his hands go and detonate his usual powerful punches, as witnessed in the Joseph Parker fight.
It then all changed in Zhang caught Wilder off balance with a big right hook in round five, before following that up with another huge right hand while Wilder was turned in the corner, sending the ‘Bronze Bomber’ crashing to the canvas.
Wilder got back to his feet, but the referee deemed he was unable to continue, waving the contest off and handing Zhang the victory, much to the Chinese star’s delight.
“I had to avoid Wilder’s right hand, and I successfully took it away in the fight. I blocked a few punches but he punches hard, I give him a lot of respect.
“When I lost to Parker it was a fair loss, he was the better man that night, but I learned a lot from that fight. When I knocked out Joe Joyce I was overconfident, and I underestimated Parker. Now it’s the road to the champion. Big Bang is still here.”
Zhang’s win secured a dominant one-sided whitewash win for Queensberry over Matchroom, going alongside Daniel Dubois stopping Filip Hrgovic via cuts in the eighth round to win the interim IBF heavyweight title.
There was also a stoppage win for Hamzah Sheeraz over Ammo Williams, plus Nick Ball defeating Ray Ford by split decision to win the WBA featherweight title, and Willy Hutchinson beating Craig Richards by unanimous decision.
