Devin Haney has sent two demands to Ryan Garcia regarding a prospective super-fight later this year.
The American boxing rivals are two of the biggest names across the entire sport, with Haney — a pound-for-pound caliber fighter — and Garcia, a fast and powerful puncher. They have even boxed before in the amateur circuit, and the pros, with KingRy shocking The Dream by dropping him three times en route to a majority decision win in Brooklyn, two years ago.
The fight was not without controversy. Garcia missed weight by 3.5 pounds and was ineligible to win Haney’s title, and tested positive for the banned substance Ostarine in the aftermath, which prompted the New York State Athletic Commission to overturn Garcia’s win to a no-contest. It suspended him for one year, and also ordered him to forfeit part of his purse.
Because of the way in which both fighters have rebounded, with Garcia returning to sport with a statement win recently over Mario Barrios, taking El Azteca’s WBC welterweight championship with a disciplined and mature display, and Haney bouncing back with extraordinary wins over elite fighters Jose Ramirez and Brian Norman.
Now, they could be set to do it all over again — Garcia just needs to bow to Haney’s ultimatums.
- Haney wants a unification fight first
- Garcia must accept performance-enhancing testing
“No more talking,” Garcia told Haney, just one day after his promoter Oscar de la Hoya told DAZN he was adamant about booking one of the best bouts the sport of boxing could produce. “We either fight after you fight [Rolly Romero] or just keep your mouth mute b****.”
Haney responded: “Sign up for drug-testing, hoe. Then we can fight after I beat Rolly.”
Haney and Garcia’s latest back-and-forth follows de la Hoya’s comments on DAZN about wanting to make this fight a reality.
“Devin Haney does deserve the rematch, because he’s been talking a lot and his past performance was really good,” the promoter said.
“What Ryan did in his last fight with Barrios, obviously a world champion, he’s back — better than ever, mentally and physically.
“I’d love to see that rematch; Haney vs Ryan Garcia. It makes all the sense in the world. Let’s make this fight happen,” he finished.
