Billy Joe Saunders was victorious this past Saturday night and defeated his mandatory challenger Willie Monroe Jr via unanimous decision.
The fight wasn’t a memorable one and Saunders admitted that he felt a bit rusty and needed to shake off the cobwebs.
After the bout, everyone’s attention was on Golovkin-Canelo. Had ‘GGG’ won, it would have been Saunders next in line most likely. But the draw result certainly mixed things up a bit.
Saunders did mention another possible name that he would like to fight.
Amir Khan.
“Khan’s boxed before at 160, I’d love the Amir Khan fight, what a fight that would be. He’s a very good name. I rate him. I’ve watched him for years, I know him and Kell Brook haven’t got it on, but if Khan’s looking for a big UK fight then I want to fight him,” said Saunders at the post fight press conference.
Saunders had no ill will in his tone. He respects Khan as a fighter and because of that, he wants to fight him.
“I don’t call his name by being disrespectful to him, I call his name because I think he’s a good fighter,” explained Saunders.
But according to Saunders, he will fight Khan under one condition.
“I’m willing if he wants to come to 160, he done it for Canelo, he might not think I’m a good fighter to Canelo and he’s got a good chance of winning the title at 160, I’d love the chance,” said the WBO World middleweight champion.
So far Khan has not responded to Saunders’ call out.
The former world lightweight champion has set up a training camp in San Francisco, USA.
‘King’ Khan has stated that he’s looking for another world title fight and wants to avenge losses to Danny Garcia or Lamont Peterson.
“I would love to fight Danny and or Peterson again. Those fights should not be difficult to make as we all have Al Haymon as our advisor. People might see these as 50-50 fights but I want to box the best,” said Khan in a recent interview.
According to Khan’s Twitter account, the Olympic medallist was in Birmingham this past weekend but he also had time to do commentary for the megafight between Golovkin and Canelo on BoxNation.
