Former heavyweight champion, Andy Ruiz Jr, welcomes the challenge of an aggressive Luis Ortiz this weekend.
Ruiz (34-2, 22 KOs) spoke to FightHype ahead of the event in Los Angeles. When it was put to him that this could be one of the more physical fights of his career, Ruiz agreed.
“Yeah it is, because it’s a style that I haven’t fought before, you know? But like I said, I like taking chances and I feel like I perform better when I’m under pressure. On Sunday it’s gonna’ be a hell of a fight, but I know I’m gonna’ get that victory.”
Ruiz has faced the likes of Joseph Parker and Anthony Joshua. He lost to both men, most recently AJ, but started his comeback trail with a decision victory over Chris Arreola in May, 2021.
When facing Ortiz, he will be looking to make more of a statement than he managed on his last outing – and it looks like he may have no choice. The former heavyweight champ was asked his thoughts on Ortiz saying that he’ll be looking for a knockout ‘from the first bell to the last.’ It turns out that Ruiz welcomes the challenge.
“That’s good. Like I said, I’m a good counter puncher so that’s exactly what we’ve been practicing about. A lot of countering, staying focussed, staying ready, staying alert – so that’s perfect if he does that.”
It was in the third round that Andy Ruiz was dropped by Anthony Joshua back in 2019. Joshua – much like Ortiz says he will – went all out for the knockout, and we witnessed the counterpunching Ruiz is talking about. As we know, it served him well that night and there’s a chance it may do so again.
Whatever happens, it’s hard to picture anything but a thrilling fight considering the styles of the two.
US fans can watch the fight on FOX Sports PPV for $74.99, whereas UK Fans can stream the action on FITE TV at a price of £12.99.
