The calamitous rematch organizers planned involving historic welterweight rivals Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao received a significant update on Wednesday, April 29.
It turns out one of Mayweather’s recent mutterings was true. Despite official statements from Netflix, that the match would be a fully sanctioned fist-fight held at The Sphere of Las Vegas, one official tied to the event suggested this isn’t a lock.
Instead, traditional venues like the T-Mobile Arena or MGM Grand Garden Arena are now being considered, according to Boxing Scene’s Lance Pugmire, who reported that the date could be brought forward from September 19 to mid-August.
“It made no sense to put it at The Sphere – it’s not connected to a casino,” said an unofficial, perhaps unaware that, actually, it is connected to The Venetian.
One of the bigger spectacles in boxing through 2025 was the Canelo vs Terence Crawford fight which took place at the Allegiant Stadium — a venue that, unlike The Sphere, has no literal connection to any casino.
One thing is clear: “It’s one million percent not happening [at The Sphere].”
Speaking of Canelo, Pugmire reported in a separate post that the Mexican legend, who has not fought since the beatdown ‘Bud’ Crawford gave him, would attend the Cinco de Mayo clash between the unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and challenger, David Benavidez.
A two-weight world champion and pound-for-pound star already, Benavidez has a long, checkered history with Canelo but Alvarez is not attending the event for ‘El Monstro’. Or, indeed, ‘Zurdo’ for that matter.
Trainer-manager Eddy Reynoso told the publication Canelo would attend the event but for Jaime Munguía, a stablemate, who fights Jose Armando Resendiz on the main card, just before the headline bout.
