Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua are two of boxing’s biggest names, and now a British heavyweight star has shared his regret on never facing either of the two men.
David Price is a Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist who entered the pro ranks with impressive amateur pedigree and high expectations, due to him also being a three-time national champion.
Early on, the Liverpudlian looked set to meet those expectations, winning his first fifteen fights and defeating the likes of John McDermott, Sam Sexton and Audley Harrison to pick up the English and then British titles to seemingly set up a huge clash with Fury.
However, before Price got the chance to face ‘The Gypsy King’, he was twice knocked out by Tony Thompson, derailing his career and causing a collapse in talks for the proposed showdown with Fury.
Six years later, Price hung up the gloves, after a seventh career stoppage defeat and he has now admitted to DAZN via Offers.Bet that he wishes he could’ve gone toe-to-toe with both Fury and Anthony Joshua.
“Those big career defining fights, even win, lose, or draw, I didn’t quite make it to them.
“It’s one of those where I have to accept that I didn’t have what it took to get to that level without a little bit of luck along the way. Some people get that luck, some people don’t, and I didn’t get it.
“It’s a shame really as well because I think they would’ve liked to have crossed paths with myself.”
Although he was unable to bring heavyweight gold back home to Liverpool, Price holds a warm place in the heart of British boxing fans, and still managed to have his fair share of standout moments in the ring following the heart-wrenching defeats to Thompson.
