Canelo Alvarez successfully retained his undisputed super-middleweight titles after defeating Jaime Munguia in Las Vegas on Saturday.
The two Mexican fighters were going head to head at the T-Mobile Arena on the traditional Cinco De Mayo weekend, but it was Canelo who claimed bragging rights with a unanimous decision victory.
It has been a lively build up on fight week, with Alvarez clashing with his former promoter Oscar De La Hoya, who now represents Munguia.
Canelo didn’t let that bother him in the fight though, as he remained calm, cool and composed throughout.
Munguia started the bout relatively well, but it all changed in round four when Alvarez landed a big shot that sent his rival crashing to the canvas.
Munguia was able to get up from the knockdown, but Canelo began to take over from that point onwards and was dominating proceedings heading into the later rounds.
Munguia was able to see out the fight, but Canelo was a clear winner, although some of the scorecards were a bit closer than expected, with the judges having it 117-110, 116-111, 115-112 in the defending champion’s favour.
It means that Munguia is handed the first defeat of his professional career, while Alvarez remains unbeaten at 168lbs, with his only two losses coming against Dmitry Bivol at light-heavyweight and Floyd Mayweather at light-middleweight.
Attention will now turn to who Canelo will face when he is expected to return in September, with fans already clamouring for the long-awaited potential showdown with David Benavidez.
