Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Oscar De La Hoya had a very public fallout at the recent press conference ahead of his fight with Jamie Munguia and Eddie Hearn doesn’t think it is done yet as he claims Alvarez may attack De la Hoya.
Alvarez’s fiery exchange with former promoter De La Hoya has set the internet ablaze after De La Hoya, who is somewhat known for his sharp tongue, attempted to bring up past controversies regarding Alvarez’s failed drug tests. This prompted ‘Canelo ‘to rise to the occasion and so the press conference became the stage for a verbal showdown.
Their rift initially dates back to Alvarez’s departure from ‘Golden Boy Promotions’ in 2020, just before his ascent to becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion. He defends all four of those belts this weekend against fellow Mexican Munguia who is now promoted by De La Hoya.
In light of all this, Hearn, who has previously promoted ‘Canelo’ and also had several of his own verbal run-ins with De La Hoya, has said he thinks it is far from over yet.
Speaking to Matchroom Boxing, he gave his reaction.
“I think there is a huge history between those two, it is very bitter. And I think part of it is that hatred from Oscar to ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, he left them, they went to court, and it really affected the business of Golden Boy cause ‘Canelo’ was the flagship.
“Then there is the element of trying to rattle ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and make him get in a fight with Jaime Munguia, which I think is a really tough fight by the way.
“So yeah it’s a shame, There was a lot said about stealing money from fighters but it is what it is. You give me those two men and I back Canelo Alvarez every day of the week, proper man, proper morals, great fighter.”
Hearn then claimed the ‘Canelo’ could silence De La Hoya once and for all.
“I spoke to ‘Canelo’ last night and I wouldn’t be surprised if he knocked him spark out. He would chin him, he would not hesitate.”
‘Canelo’ would be best saving his aggression for Muinguia, a tough challenger who is coming off the back of a stoppage win over John Ryder, which is something ‘Canelo’ failed to do when he faced the Brit, winning instead on points over 12 rounds.
