Canelo Alvarez’s future has taken a surprise turn after it was reported that he is set to dramatically leave PBC and make a sensational return to Matchroom Boxing this summer.
There has been talks for months regarding who Canelo will fight in both May and September, with the likes of Jermall Charlo, David Benavidez and Terence Crawford all mentioned.
It appeared that negotiations were hitting a stalemate though due to disagreements over the opponent, with the PBC believed to have given the Mexican pound-for-pound star an ultimatum regarding who they wanted him to face.
Another twist has now occurred, with Canelo set to depart PBC and return to Matchroom Boxing and DAZN, with fights against Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga reported to be lined up according to ESPN journalist Salvador Rodriguez.
“Change of plans. Everything indicates that neither Charlo, nor Benavidez, nor Crawford nor PBC for Canelo. The Berlanga and Munguia plan with Matchroom is activated for the four-time world champion.”
Canelo fought on DAZN from 2018 to 2021, before temporarily heading to PBC for a fight with Caleb Plant before returning to compete on Matchroom events.
It looks like history may repeat itself, as after fights with Dmitry Bivol, Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder on DAZN, Canelo had one fight with PBC in September against Jermell Charlo, but appears to be immediately heading back once again.
Potential opponents Munguia and Berlanga are both unbeaten, with Munguia extending his record to 43-0 with a stoppage win over Ryder last month, while Berlanga moved to 22-0 after a knockout victory against Padraig McCrory this past weekend.
