Once upon a time the rivalry between these two modern greats was civil, respectful, and strictly business.
Since their first riveting encounter five years ago things have turned personal between the two and there is now genuine dislike on each side.
Canelo on Golovkin:
“He talks a lot of shit about me. He’s gonna pay.”
Golovkin on Canelo:
“Where has he been all these years? If it’s personal, what has he been waiting for?”
Now 31, Canelo is the Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion while 40-year-old Golovkin is the current Unified Middleweight Champion and is moving up in weight for a shot at all the marbles at 168lbs.
The results of their first two battles have been a (hotly disputed) draw and a win for Canelo in 2018. This third fight will likely represent the last chance for Golovkin to get one up on his nemesis while the Mexican clearly wants to shut the door on this conflict and move on to pastures new.
Today, live from Los Angeles the two fighters will have the chance to get more off their chest during the launch press conference for their trilogy bout on September 17 at The T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.
It all begins at 1pm in LA which is 4pm ET and 9pm UK time. You can watch all the live coverage right here courtesy of DAZN on YouTube:
