The picture regarding the highly anticipated Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs Gennady Golovkin rematch has been somewhat vague of late.
The movement has been slow regarding getting a deal over the line at least until now; Golden Boy president Eric Gomez has shared that he feels an announcement could now be imminent.
“We’re concentrating on making the rematch. We’re very, very close (to) getting that done.” Gomez began by explaining to BoxingScene.com.
Gomez suggested that they are now just ironing out a few lingering issues before the deal can be completed.
“It’s just details we’re working out and we’re going back-and-forth and I think it’s going to get done,” Gomez told BoxingScene.com.
It has been mooted that ‘Canelo’ could potentially seek out the winner of this weekend’s WBO world middleweight title fight between David Lemieux and Billy Joe Saunders.
Golden Boy Promotions top dog, Oscar De La Hoya has said that if Lemieux is successful on December 16th, that is a fight he’d like to make given Lemieux and Saunders given both operate under his promotional banner. Both of those combatants, Saunders and Lemieux have both shared a desire to take on ‘Canelo’ next if they are successful in their upcoming battle in Montreal.
Eric Gomez however, dispelled those suggestions and shared that it is now his company’s primary focus to given in to the public demand to see a conclusive statement as to who is the best middleweight in world boxing.
“Our total focus – we’re not thinking of anything else – what we want to do is the rematch. That’s what we want.”
Furthermore, Gomez says part two of the most high-profile matchup in boxing could be announced as early as next week.”
“As for when this could be announced,” Gomez told BoxingScene.com. “If we can get it done some time this week, we can announce it this week.”
On a final note, Gomez further emphasised the deal is close to being concluded. “But we’re very, very close. Concentrated 100-percent on getting all the details done.”
