Canelo Alvarez has revealed his pick for the upcoming undisputed lightweight world title fight between Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Haney is the betting favourite going into the contest, with many of the opinion that the 35-year-old Lomachenko appears to have lost a step.
Speaking to Fighter’s Corner, Canelo revealed he too was leaning towards the young American, though gave props to both fighters.
“It’s a nice fight, I like it. I think both are good fighters, but Devin Haney right now is the favourite.”
Haney became undisputed champion at 135lbs with an emphatic win over George Kambosos Jr in Australia last year, before cementing his status with an equally impressive victory in the rematch
Lomachenko was a unified world champion at the weight before being unseated by Teofimo Lopez back in 2021.
However, the masterful Ukrainian has bounced back from the defeat with three consecutive wins over Masayoshi Nakatani, Richard Commey and Jamaine Ortiz
A meeting with the prodigal Shakur Stevenson could be in store for the winner, after Stevenson announced his arrival to the lightweight division with an impressive stoppage victory over Japanese opponent, Shuichiro Yoshino, earlier this month.
That said, Haney has made no secret of the fact that he is tight at the weight, and there is a sense that a move up to 140lbs is inevitable for ‘The Dream’ sooner rather than later.
The pair will lock horns on May 20 at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, with fans able to watch on ESPN in the USA and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom.
