Upon his signing of a three fight deal with PBC earlier this summer, there has been constant speculation over who Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’ opponents will be from Al Haymon’s stacked roster.
A September 20 clash with Jermell Charlo was quickly announced, however who Canelo’s other two opponents on Showtime Sports will be remains up in the air.
In a recent feature with DAZN Boxing, the network’s president Stephen Espinoza revealed some of the names that were being considered for a shot at the Mexican star.
“It’s up to him, he’s at the stage of his career where he’s manoeuvring himself as he should be.”
The good thing is that there’s not a bad fight, we’ve laid the cards on the table. [Demetrius] Andrade’s on the table, Benavidez, Jermall [Charlo], there could be some surprises, these guys [Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford] jumping up, there’s not a bad fight available”
“It doesn’t matter who he picks, they are all really good matchups.”
Benavidez, as the consensus number one contender at super middleweight, is probably the most sought after fight from boxing fans, and some even believe Alvarez is ducking ‘The Mexican Monster.’
Espinoza’s comments came before Terence Crawford’s stunning win over Errol Spence Jr, so Spence’s name can probably be now removed from the ‘Canelo Sweepstakes.
However, Alvarez would be foolish to look past his first fight under the Showtime banner against Charlo. There is a growing view that the Mexican is the fighter on the decline, and has perhaps failed to truly impress since his 2021 win over Caleb Plant.
