Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn are reportedly a few minor details away from signing to fight.
The pair have been on a long and winding road to get here, taking a massive detour last year when, during fight week, it was revealed that Benn had tested positive for a banned substance.
It meant the October fight was canned, and Eubank went on to face Liam Smith twice – one stoppage loss, one stoppage win – in the time since.
Benn’s fight has been outside the ring, and is one that’s not entirely resolved when it comes to the British Boxing Board of Control and the UK Anti-Doping Agency.
Although he is still without a license to fight in the UK, Mail Sport today reports that the pair have secured a previously rumoured date of February 3 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Talks have ramped up since Benn’s return to the ring in Florida this year, and it’s understood that he will now face Eubank at the middleweight limit having previously signed their 2022 bout at a catchweight of 157.
It’s said that ‘only minor details on Eubank’s side are yet to be resolved’ before the bout can be announced by Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom.
Across town at the OVO Arena Wembley, former sparring partners turned light-heavyweight rivals Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez will square off.
The WBA World Title Final Eliminator promoter by BOXXER and broadcast on Sky Sports has been rescheduled from October due to a back injury on the part of Azeez.
Neither side are likely to budge on the date clash given the scarce availability of stadiums paired with the reluctance for yet more postponements.
