The Croke Park dream for Katie Taylor may not be over yet as Conor McGregor has swaggered in to save the day.
Taylor’s dream of fighting in front of a home crowd of 80,000 fans seemed dashed – or at least put on ice – this week as her promoter, Eddie Hearn, claimed Dublin’s Croke Park was ‘three times the cost of Wembley.’
The matter was brought up in the Irish Parliament with the date in May being highlighted as the reason behind the failure to make it happen, and Croke Park Director, Peter McKenna, came out in defence of their pricing.
The Irish Independent then revealed that it was a €500,000 security bill Hearn was balking at. The money required to police the event seemed to be a step too far in an already expensive endeavour.
Enter Conor McGregor, former UFC double champion, who has now offered to sponsor the event to the tune of half a million to make it happen.
The extra security bill is 500k to have Katie Taylor fight at croke park? I will sponsor the event to see this happen.

Eddie Hearn responded ‘let’s talk’ before McGregor sought more information and put a caveat on his offer in the form of Taylor’s purse.
“What’s the craic lad. Give me the current landscape. I’m in. Is this doable still? Or is it a double show, the point first with Croke park later in year, post the GAA season? I’m in either way. She better be getting her worth for this also.”

McGregor references the idea of Hearn’s plan to revisit the Croke Park conversation later in the sporting calendar – most likely September – in the hope that a less busy schedule will made the deal work.
This route would mean Taylor would fight her Amanda Serrano rematch – assuming Serrano beats Erika Cruz Hernandez this weekend – in May in Ireland’s 3 Arena or somewhere similar before getting that elusive stadium fight.
Whatever happens, it seems McGregor’s all in to get Taylor the audience she deserves at the tail end of her career.
