Oscar De La Hoya has came out with a prediction for the pay per view buys generated by Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia – and it’s safe to say the promoter is feeling confident.
As head of Golden Boy, who promote Garcia, the former world champion has a vested interest in making sure the fight is as big a commercial success as possible.
And, at a press conference, De La Hoya told media he believes Davis vs Garcia could surpass the remarkable 2.4 million buys that his iconic fight against Floyd Mayweather produced.
“I truly feel in terms of numbers and business, I really do feel this is like Mayweather-De La Hoya,
“I believe it can do – you know, people called me crazy when I said it can do two million homes – I believe it can break 2.4 million homes that me and Mayweather did. It’s that big of a fight
“Come to think of it, I believe Tank and Ryan, or maybe Tank, is bigger than Mayweather was when he fought me, with world titles and he has popularity and Instagram followers.
So, we’re in a different world. We’re in a different time, and these kids are the very best. And the fact that they’re fighting each other, it creates the perfect storm.”
The two young stars will lock horns on April 22nd in Las Vegas in what is by far and away the highlight of the boxing calendar for the first half of 2023.
Whilst De La Hoya’s prediction may be a touch on the hopeful side, there is no doubt the hotly anticipated clash between the two young stars will garner some big numbers at the box office.
