Six-division world champion and founder of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya has begun to question the influence of Floyd Mayweather Jr after he was seen going for a run with his fighter Ryan Garcia.
Garcia was being linked to a mammoth showdown with Devin Haney just a few weeks ago, and was spotted meeting and running with Mayweather as the whispers of a fight grew into strong rumours, and at that time, De La Hoya seemed comfortable with the pair’s link-up.
However, shortly after their time together, Garcia u-turned on the fight with Haney and is now in hot pursuit of a title challenge against WBA Super-Lightweight Champion, Rolando Romero.
On his Instagram, De La Hoya indicated that if Mayweather is meeting with his fighter, he should stick to teaching about in the ring defence, rather than outside of the ring defence, clearly believing that Mayweather played a part in Garcia’s decision to backtrack on the Haney bout.

“Pre-run with Floyd = Ryan wants Haney.
Post-run with Floyd = Ryan wants Rolly.
Golden Boy has worked with Ryan Garcia since he turned pro, and together we have made him the biggest draw in boxing. We will make his fight with Rolly into a huge event, as we always do.
Floyd, if you want to give Ryan the secret to defense in the ring, that’s great. Other than that, if you are still a promoter like it says here, f**k off.”
It appears that an announcement is imminent for Romero-Garcia, but WBA Interim Champion, Ismael Barroso will be left pondering where he fits into plans, after expecting a title shot following on from his win over Ohara Davies last weekend.
