Deontay Wilder has an instruction for Ryan Garcia to overcome the experience gap with Gervonta Davis when the pair face off in Las Vegas.
Much has been made of Davis having the better level of opposition, and how that might prepare him come fight night. He’s had 28 fights to Garcia’s 23, and that includes successful title fights in three-weight classes.
‘Tank’ boasts names like Yuriorkis Gamboa, Mario Barrios and Leo Santa Cruz, whilst Garcia’s standout wins are over Olympian Luke Campbell and his last outing against Javier Fortuna.
‘The Bronze Bomber’ first told KO Artist Sports that fans should witness the event in person, before stating that Garcia should be making up for the gap in past competition by not leaving the gym.
“Tank versus Ryan is gonna be a hell of a fight. That’s gonna be one that you’ve got to be there to see it, you just can’t watch it on TV. You can’t wait to hear about it.”
“Most definitely [he can make up for the lack of experience] – at this point in time, while we’re talking, I hope he’s training.”
There’s another reason the young Californian will be putting in double the effort in camp – the catchweight.
It’s in the contract that Garcia must cut down to 136lb – a number just one pound over the lightweight limit that he once claimed he may never fight at again. The contract term was signed, according to him, for the love of boxing and boxing fans.
And it is indeed fans who are winning here. Garcia and ‘Tank’ facing off represents a welcome change in the sport of the best facing the best in their prime despite any broadcaster or promoter conflicts.
The undefeated pair will meet in the ring on April 22 in Las Vegas.
