Devin Haney was arrested in Hollywood and booked for possession of a concealed weapon, as per TMZ.
Haney was a passenger in his car, and was pulled over around midnight on Wednesday July 12. It’s reported that the police found a firearm, and the boxer was arrested since it was his vehicle and nobody claimed ownership of the weapon.
He was subsequently released on $35,000 bail and is expected in court next month to address the matter. Haney’s father and trainer, Bill, told ESPN that it was a misunderstanding.
“It’s a misunderstanding that will be solved when Devin goes to court. It’s unfortunate that he was arrested with his armed licensed security, and I’m confident things are going to be worked out.”
The 24-year-old is currently one of the hottest properties in the sport. He holds all four lightweight world titles following a victory over George Kambosos Jr last year.
He beat the Australian again in his backyard for his first defence, and recently won a unanimous decision over elite Ukrainian, Vasily Lomachenko.
Now he’s weighing up his options, with a rematch with Lomachenko or a mandatory defence against Shakur Stevenson his two options at 135lbs.
Should he decide to move up a division – something that is inevitable but may be pushed back – there are at least two title shots awaiting him.
He’s in receipt of an offer to face WBC super lightweight champion, Regis Prograis, and has also been in a back and forth with recently-crowned WBO champ, Teofimo Lopez.
