Devin Haney’s first defence of the WBC super-lightweight title was set to be one of the biggest events of 2024 as he prepared to face major pay-per-view draw Ryan Garcia, but concerns over the fight have now started to grow after the latest comments from the pair.
Garcia took part in the standout show of last year, where he picked up a first professional defeat in a stoppage loss to Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, yet it doesn’t seem as though that blemish on his record has had too much of an impact.
Twelve months later, and ‘King Ry’ is poised to challenge for a world title for the first time in his career, but has been tasked with a serious challenge against one of the sports’ pound-for-pound contenders in Haney, making Garcia a sizeable underdog in the bout.
Haney and Garcia clashed at Tuesday’s press conference, where Haney claimed he could smell alcohol on the breath of the challenger, and just hours afterwards, Garcia posted a picture of himself smoking marijuana and told social media that he was ‘high as f**k’.

“[Training is going] amazing bro. Looking good and feeling good, I’m laughing because I am high as f**k.”
“I’m going to beat Sean O’Malley’s a** in MMA. I’d never let a dude with rainbow hair beat me in my life.”
In response, a disappointed Haney declared that he will not attend today’s press conference, clearly feeling that he is taking the contest more seriously than his opponent.
