The much-anticipated fight between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia is getting ever closer and now a fighter bet has given a huge twist
The build-up to this world title showdown has been fractious to say the least. There has been verbal back and forth, physical altercations and plenty of disputes between the two fighters.
Haney has been the more professional of the two and kept focussed on the fight while Garcia has spoken about his opponent’s religion, and his quest for belts, not legacy.
He has also admitted to smoking and drinking and generally behaved in such an erratic way that people are worried about his mental health, though he has always maintained he is fine and even threatened to sue the New York commission should they assess him formally.
At the final press conference before the weigh in, Haney’s father had an idea for Garcia which was captured by DAZN.
“Whoever come over weight pays $500,000.”
Various voices tried to prevent Garcia from making the bet, including his father. ‘The Dream’ then upped the stakes even further.
“Hey Ryan, let’s do $500, 000 per pound. Shake on it?”
The pair then shook on the bet and Garcia began another explicit rant.
This is Garcia’s first world title shot, while Haney is defending the belt he won at super lightweight at the first time of asking having already been undisputed down at lightweight.
The fight is now just over 24 hours away, and can be viewed on DAZN PPV.
