Eddie Hearn believes Floyd Mayweather’s exhibition fight with Aaron Chalmers is going to go one of three ways – and none of them are good.
The 50-0 boxing great has taken to the exhibition circuit since retirement and there’s no sign of him slowing down. He’ll lace up in the United Kingdom for the first time against Aaron Chalmers – a 1-0 boxer and former MMA competitor who’s best known for featuring on MTV’s Geordie Shore.
Whilst tickets are still on sale for London’s O2 Arena, if fans fancy tuning in from home, they’ll have to fork out £32.26 to streaming website Zeus Network – one of the highest boxing PPV prices in UK history
Hearn, who’s no stranger to a Box Office event, reckons it could be the lowest selling ever. He discussed the event with Boxing Social.
“Where is it on? Thirty what? Somewhere between two and four thousand [PPV buys]. If that … I don’t know anyone that even knows Floyd Mayweather is fighting on Saturday. Who is putting the money up for these events?”
It appears that the Matchroom boss believes blame lies at the door of the promotion rather than the stars.
“To be honest with you, I don’t know Aaron Chalmers, but he has got ability and he does train with Adam Booth, or in that gym. Seems like a nice guy. That should actually be quite a big event. I think that the Mayweather fights are f***ing naff to be honest with you. At least Aaron Chalmers can box and he’ll have a go. But literally no one knows that has even happening.”
He set out three roads for the event to go down – and not one is positive.
“Someone has hired out the O2 Arena thinking that they’re gonna sell out the O2 Arena with Floyd Mayweather and they’re going to do a couple hundred thousand buys on pay-per-view. It’s either going to get cancelled before Saturday, or someone is gonna do their absolute conkers, or people are not going to get paid. One of the three.”
Mayweather faces Chalmers on Saturday 25 February in London.
