Eddie Hearn has given his opinion on the ‘lumpy’ pay-per-view price for the highly anticipated clash between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Ryan Garcia.
Davis vs Garcia is undoubtedly the biggest fight of the year thus far, especially after the collapse of Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk, even though no belts are on the line.
At a catchweight of 136lbs, two of the sports’ biggest names go toe-to-toe and put their undefeated records on the line in an event that will hopefully mark a turning point for matchmaking in boxing.
Fans are hoping the clash will act as a catalyst for more big fights getting made in the future – not only the willingness to face the best but also different broadcast partners working together.
Remarkably, the fight will be shown through two broadcasters in a rare deal that will see fans able to watch on both Showtime and DAZN PPV.
However, the downside is that they slapped a price tag of $84.99 for the pay-per-view event, an increase of $10 from Davis’ last fight and $50 more than Garcia’s subscription based cost.
In an interview with iFL TV, Eddie Hearn reacted to the ‘lumpy’ pricing.
“Yeah, it’s lumpy.
Great fight. We’ve seen U.S. pay-per-views before at $89.99/$99.99, it is a lot of money, isn’t it? It is kind of industry practice for a mega-fight in America, which it is, I think that it is one of the biggest pay-per-views in America for a long time.”
“It is not my fight.”
Although Hearn is not directly involved with the event, Matchroom are partners with DAZN, which has been criticised in the past for putting on PPV events when they originally said that streaming service was a way of avoiding them.
