Boxing promoters around the world understand that their companies can often be a revolving door for talented fighters.
As new platforms emerge, older companies fade away, and ever more money is used to lure fighters to a new stable, loyalties are soon forgotten.
One fighter who looks set to make the switch is Ryan Garcia. After having a very public spat with his promoter Oscar De La Hoya on social media, it’s hard to imagine the two working together again.
Add to that legal letters and potential lawsuits, and things don’t look good for the partnership that dates back to 2016.
Speaking to the DAZN Boxing Show, Eddie Hearn said the relationship between the American star and De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions is over and revealed the 24 year-old is looking to join PBC.
“Firstly, [Oscar De La Hoya] seems to be more concerned with me than Ryan Garcia.
Every Tweet from his account is about me. I think one thing we know for certain is the relationship between those two has been volatile for a while. But it’s over. You don’t come back from this. You don’t come back from a public shaming on social media, from the courtroom, from legal costs. I’ve never known an instance where it’s been this deep and everyone shakes hands and just goes ‘yeh, let’s just go back to work.’ It looks messy.
Ryan Garcia clearly wants to leave Golden Boy Promotions. He’s gone. He’s made his move. They have made their decisions about what they want to do and it’s not Matchroom. Yes, absolutely, [it’s PBC.]
Now it’s up to the courts to decide whether he is able to do that. It will be a horrific mess, it will cost people a lot of money and it might keep him out of the ring. It’s a bad look for everybody.”
Despite his recent world title loss to Gervonta Davis, should Golden Boy lose Garcia ‘KingRy’ it sure will be a blow. The 24-year-old remains a huge draw with a vast social media following who brings plenty of new young eyes to the sport.
