Trainer Derrick James has finally spoken out about his charge Errol Spence Jr’s devastating loss to Terence Crawford last month.
In an undisputed welterweight world title fight that many observers classed as a pick ‘em, Spence ended up on the receiving end of a one sided beating from Crawford, which culminated in a ninth round stoppage
In a recent interview with October Red Boxing, James explained that he believed the loss was more down to ‘The Truth’ having an off night than the greatness of Crawford.
“That’s life man, you can prepare for something and it doesn’t work out. You can be off, your timing can be off and your reactions can be off. It was like he [Spence] was walking in quicksand.
That can be down to the weight. Whatever it was, it wasn’t the Errol that we’ve become accustomed to seeing or the same guy that’s been in the gym.
Who knows what it was? I have no idea and I make no excuses for his performance, but that was not the Errol Spence that we all know and love.
It was more about Errol than it was about Crawford, I believe. It happens sometimes in boxing, unfortunately.”
The option is there to activate a contractual rematch clause should Spence want another crack at ‘Bud,’ though there has been no official word on his decision as of yet.
He expressed his desire to run it back at the post fight conference, with the caveat that he’d prefer a second fight take place up at light middleweight.
