Tyson Fury’s promoter has mapped out what the next year might look like in the heavyweight’s career – and it doesn’t involve a grudge match with Anthony Joshua.
Following negotiations for a fight with ‘AJ’ breaking down, Frank Warren has spoken to The Express about what his fighter’s near future looks like.
“I spoke to Tyson yesterday and he was talking about Joyce next year. Having this fight with Chisora, hopefully unifying the titles [against Usyk] and then fighting Joe Joyce so that’s his next year for him, isn’t it?”
“That’s what Tyson was talking about, so we’ll see where we go with it… whatever he chooses to do, I’ll support it, I look at my relationship with him as a little bit special and I only want the best for him.”
Of course, a fight with Usyk would be the one that fans want most, simply for the fact that it would crown an undisputed heavyweight champion for the first time since Lennox Lewis. As much as Fury says that he’s ‘completed the game of boxing’, being one fight away from undisputed is something that doesn’t happen often. The chance is there, and surely he must take it.
Joe Joyce is a hot name in the division following his destruction of Joseph Parker, Fury’s training partner. It’s an intriguing match-up that, in theory, should be easy to make, as both fighters are under Warren’s Queensbury banner.
Whilst the Chisora fight isn’t a done deal just yet, rumours are that it is progressing and will be announced very soon. In terms of opponents, Warren seems happy with ‘Del Boy’ for a few reasons.
“We want to get him out before the end of the year so he can have the big one in February with Usyk.”
“If you look down the BoxRec ratings Chisora is the highest available challenger… they’ve had a few words over the last few months and I think Fury makes a very valid point, Chisora did give Usyk a very tough fight so it will be a good yardstick.”
With December 3 still the date we’re expecting to see ‘The Gypsy King’ take to the ring, an announcement is expected imminently.
