The biggest fight of the year from a pure boxing aspect is happening on September 16th.
Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez will go to battle but while they both wait for their scheduled date, Team Triple G is already eyeing the next target.
The Kazakh boxer holds all the belts in the division except for one – The WBO title. And that belongs to none other than Billy Joe Saunders.
Should Golovkin get past the Mexican, it’s clear that the next step is to face off against Saunders sooner than later according to promoter Tom Loeffler.
“Since winning the WBC title, Gennady was determined to take on the other world champions and there was no way to get them all into a ring,” said the promoter according to boxingscene.com
Golovkin’s trophy case consists of the WBA, IBF, IBO, WBC belts. Missing only the WBO belt.
“Gennady has always wanted to unify all the titles and now he only has to win one more, the WBO, which is in the possession of Billy Joe Saunders, whom we want to face after this match against Canelo,” told Loeffler.
Saunders will also fight on September 16th for the first time since December 2016. The WBO World middleweight belt will be on the line against challenger Willie Monroe Jr who Golovkin stopped back in 2015.
The WBO champion has been criticized in the past for getting too bloated up in between fights but as you can see from this training video – Billy Joe is in shape and ready for his title defence.
