Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has expressed interest in organizing a unification fight between Jai Opetaia and Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramírez. The two fighters could clash in a battle to unify the cruiserweight world titles.
In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Hearn shared his vision for a showdown that would consolidate the WBA, IBF, and WBO cruiserweight titles.
During the discussion, Helwani asked Hearn about the likelihood of this fight happening soon.
Hearn was resolute, reaffirming his commitment to creating meaningful matchups and emphasizing his willingness to put his fighters in tough challenges.
“Oscar [De La Hoya] seems to be more bothered about the records… Now records are for DJs. I want real fights,” Hearn said.
The promoter described Jai Opetaia as “a different animal” in the cruiserweight division, noting that while Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramírez is talented, this fight would be a considerable challenge.
“It’s the best fight in the division, and it’s a must-make fight… As good as Zurdo is, Opetaia’s a different animal,” Hearn stated.
Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramírez has made history as the first unified world champion from Mexico in the cruiserweight division.
Previously, Ramírez became the first Mexican fighter to claim a super middleweight world title.
In his recent victory over Chris Billam-Smith, Ramírez added the WBO title to the WBA belt he already held. This accomplishment solidified his standing as one of the division’s top fighters.
Although Ramírez has expressed interest in facing Oleksandr Usyk, one of his idols, his immediate plans seem to focus on other opponents.
Jai Opetaia, the current IBF champion, emerges as the leading contender for a unification fight.
Another possibility could be a clash with Noel Mikaelian, the WBC champion in the cruiserweight division.
The potential fight between Ramírez and Opetaia could determine the undisputed cruiserweight champion.
Eddie Hearn is confident that this matchup will gain approval, marking a significant milestone in boxing.
On the other hand, promoter Oscar De La Hoya may also view a unification fight between Jai Opetaia and Gilberto Ramírez favorably.
