Jaime Munguia successfully retained his WBO World super welterweight title with a resounding unanimous decision victory over challenger Takeshi Inoue at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.
Making an aggressive start, Inoue took the fight to Munguia from the outset, swarming the champion against the ropes and attempting to ‘bully the bully’ with relentless inside work.
Nevertheless, Munguia remained composed throughout, displaying very good shot selection as he generally got the better of any exchanges with his Japanese counterpart, consistently landing the cleaner and more effective punches.
Munguia displayed ring craft in addition to a varied arsenal and was also active with the jab in the middle rounds, although nothing at this stage seemed to deter Inoue’s offensive intentions, as he continued to steamroll forward; seemingly indifferent to the return fire that was coming his way.
However, Munguia’s venomous combinations to the head and body inexorably took their toll on Inoue, who struggled to maintain the furious pace he established at the start, as the fight gradually slipped out of reach.
The victory over Inoue represents Munguia’s fourth defence of his title after an active and hugely successful 2018, where he captured the title in devastating fashion in May from Sadam Ali, with a destructive fourth-round knockout.
