John Fury believes the only way Anthony Joshua deserves a fight with his son Tyson is by beating one man.
Joshua losing and failing to win back his WBA, WBO and IBF titles to Oleksandr Usyk certainly took some shine from the all-British affair, but since then he has got back to winning ways against Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius.
However, speaking to Rob Moore, Fury senior was asked if Tyson would ever fight Joshua or if that ship had sailed.
“I think in AJ’s case, looking at his last performances, he’s on a build-up mission for a big payday. They’re trying to match him, tread where the grass is low, get fights he can win.”
It was suggested that Joshua versus Fury would indeed be a big payday.
“Is it though? From what I’m seeing now it would be a mismatch. No ill-feeling to AJ at all. He’s been a great champion, he’s inspired me and I’ve had great fun watching him but he is not the fighter he was three years ago. When Andy Ruiz stopped him it all went wrong from there.”
Then came the one condition he thinks Joshua needs to meet to get a fight against Fury.
“But will he fight AJ? I think that boat’s gone. He needs a big win. The only way that fight happens is if AJ were to beat Deontay Wilder. But at the minute Tyson isn’t even considering him as a threat.”
Finally, after Joshua has been warned he will ‘pay’ if he ever fought Wilder, Fury was asked about the Brit’s chances in a fight against the hard-hitting American,
“Unfortunately, no … Only the Gypsy King can take Wilder power.”
“But if he was to get the win over Wilder, well the flame is reignited isn’t it. But he’s got to do something big. There’s no point fighting these bums.”
Regardless of what the father of lineal and WBC heavyweight champion Tyson thinks, the world would love to see Joshua get a shot at The Gypsy King.
