Anthony Joshua shared a brutal verdict on heavyweight rival Tyson Fury, as he claims that ‘he’s glad” that his British foe isn’t undisputed champion.
Fury came up short on his quest to become undisputed world heavyweight champion, as he was on the losing end of a split decision to Oleksandr Usyk, who captured Fury’s WBC title to add to his IBF, IBO, WBA and WBO titles, becoming undisputed world heavyweight champion on May 18th.
Former two-time unified world heavyweight Joshua has brutally shared his thoughts on his British rival. Speaking to The Mirror, ‘AJ’ says he thinks Fury is ‘an idiot.’
“I’m glad Fury isn’t the undisputed champion. I just think he’s an idiot. If it was someone else I might think it was a shame [that all four belts won’t be on the line]. I’ve always said he’s an idiot, he’s very disrespectful. Not in a way I care about but I just feel like he thinks by stepping on other people that makes him feel better.”
Joshua continued his tirade, saying the way he disrespected Usyk wasn’t good for the sport.
“I’m not in competition with anyone. I’m in my own lane but he has to step on people to make himself feel good and that’s not good. The way he disrespected Usyk, calling him rabbit this and middleweight that. it’s not good for the sport. If I respect you and you respect me we can lift this sport up and people think we are two of the most elite fighters in the world. But Fury will step on you and make you look like a guy who’s just walked out and a pub and he’s not on your level. Then he goes and gets spanked, he deserves it.”
Fans have clamoured for years for a clash between Joshua and Fury, and the appetite for that all-British blockbuster is still there despite neither man currently holding a world title.
However, both men are now in a position to reclaim heavyweight gold, as Fury is set to rematch Usyk on December 21st, but won’t be able to become undisputed, as the Ukranian relinquished the IBF title.
The IBF elevated their interim champion, Daniel Dubois to world champion following Usyk vacating the title, and Dubois will now face Joshua on September 21st at Wembley Stadium, with ‘AJ’ looking to become a three-time world heavyweight champion.
