The IBF World featherweight champion Lee Selby faced a bit of adversity in his fight against Eduardo Ramirez but eventually left the ring as the winner and as the champion on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena.
“I thought it was a decent performance against a tough Mexican fighter,” commented Selby who won the fight via unanimous decision after twelve rounds.
The opening rounds we’re tight but it was Selby who managed to get ahead on the scorecards.
Ramirez showed a lot of activity and was on the front foot in the third. He kept the pressure on throughout the round and made Selby miss. Though the IBF champion did land big punches in the final seconds of the round.
Selby redeemed himself in the fourth and showcased better boxing and movement. Ramirez landed good punches on the inside with his rugged style but Selby kept moving and landing good counters.
The tough weigh cut might have played a factor in the Mexican’s conditioning as he slowed down a bit in the fifth and sixth rounds. Selby was in control, landing with precision and moving well.
In seventh round Selby demonstrated good clean shots to the head and body. Selby was seeing every attack that was coming his way and dominated the much slower Ramirez. In the end of the seventh Ramirez pushed the pace a bit but Selby was still in a comfortable lead after a fairly close round.
Selby had success with multiple hooks to the head in the eighth but Ramirez again proved to be the better fighter in the latter stages of the round.
Ramirez was landing a lot in the ninth and that certainly kept his hopes up. The Mexican was on his front foot and landed visibly more than Selby and took the round.
It became clear that the gap that Selby build in the first part of the fight was narrowing down. Selby clearly understood this in the tenth round and went back into work again. The Welshman was moving a lot more and made Ramirez miss.
Ramirez showed good heart in the eleventh managed to catch Selby with a flurry of punches against the ropes. In the final round Selby hit Ramirez with his best left hook of the fight but the tough Mexican was not stunned. The IBF champion continued keeping his foot on the pedal and boxed really well as the Mexican could not respond.
