Pound-for-pound legend Vasyl Lomachenko has been told that his career is on the line as he prepares to once again challenge for a world title at 135lbs.
The legendary amateur turned professional in 2013 and won the WBO featherweight title in just his third contest, tying Saensak Muangsurin’s thirty-eight year record of quickest world title win.
From then on Lomachenko fast-became a fan favourite and moved up to defeat Roman Martinez for the WBO super-featherweight crown in 2016 before unifying the belts at lightweight with wins over Jorge Linares, Jose Pedraza and Luke Campbell.
However, a loss to Teofimo Lopez derailed his plans to become the undisputed king, before an eyebrow-raising defeat to Devin Haney broke his heart last year.
As ‘Loma’ seeks a first world title fight win since 2019, his opponent George Kambosos has warned him that his career is on the line, Boxing Scene reports.
“This fight rejuvenates my career. This gives me my redemption. Yes, I’ve been in the big fights, I’ve fought the best, I’ve won the big fights, I’ve lost the big fights. But for me, this is legacy. This is not about anything else.
“This is not about money, this is not about winning another world title and this is the same for Vasyl Lomachenko. He has made money, I have made money. He has won belts, I have won belts.
“This fight is [about] legacy – two orthodox warriors coming together for a big, big fight and I think our careers are both on the line here. Hall of Fame is on the line here. Legacy is on the line here. And I believe this is my destiny.
Lomachenko-Kambosos will take place on May 12th in Perth, and is available to watch live on Sky Sports for fans in the U.K.
