Both Vasyl Lomachenko and George Kambosos Jr will be looking to get back to the top of the sport when the meet in the ring on May 12.
Their lightweight contest will be for the vacant IBF belt in Australia, and it is one that Kambosos has previously owned.
He had had a brief spell as undisputed four belt champion back in 2021 when he got a huge upset win over Teofimo Lopez, but soon after he had a brace of fights with Devin Haney, neither of which went his way and in fact he barely won any of the 24 rounds.
His comeback was a controversial win over Brit Maxi Hughes and he now ready to face Lomachenko, who lost the other three of the belts in a unification fight with Lopez in October 2020 and then again narrowly missed out in a unification fight with Devin Haney.
Speaking to ProBoxTV, Paulie Malignaggi expressed his happiness for Kambosos’s financial gains from this fight.
“You get Lomachenko for a title, you’re gonna get paid. If anything, I’ll be happy for Kambosos setting up his retirement.”
However he was less positive about his chances of winning.
“I think he barely wins a round, I feel like he should retire after this fight. I feel he’s set himself up financially in these fights. So credit to him for having been able to maximum a win so well like he was with the Lopez fight. I don’t mind Vasyl Lomachenko versus George Kambosos, I mind it for a title shot.”
The winner of the fight might well fancy a unification against WBC champion Shakur Stevenson.
