Wayne Rooney’s rumoured link-up with Misfits Boxing has brought back memories of a viral video where he was knocked out by former teammate Phil Bardsley in a playful kitchen spar, and now Bardsley has offered his view on the reports Rooney could step into the ring.
Bardsley, who was playing for Stoke City at the time, famously rendered ‘Wazza’ unconscious after a self-confessed day of drinking, with Rooney’s head thudding onto the tiled floor with a serious impact.
On talkSPORT, the now Macclesfield Town Assistant Manager offered his full support to his old dance partner and admitted that he would be interested in being in the opposing corner for Rooney’s Misfits debut.
“If he feels like it is the right thing for him to do then I am sure that he will crack on and do it and I am sure that he will be O.K. as well because he is a big, strong boy.
“If there is any truth in the story then I would imagine that he will get himself into the gym and he will take it serious but listen let’s see if there is any truth in it first.
“I’ve not touched base with him, I haven’t spoke to him about the story, let’s wait and see and if it is what he wants to do then there’s not many people that would stop him I don’t think.
“For a donation to a charity of our choice, of course [I would get into the ring with him], it would be a bit of fun. Why not? It’d certainly sell an arena out, I am sure of that.”
Rooney has since shunned the rumours, revealing his priority is to get back into football management after being dismissed by Birmingham City in January, but admitted that he is open to the opportunity to fight in the future.
