He remains one of the most recognisable stars of the sport, but now Floyd Mayweather has passed the honour on by naming who he thinks are the most recognisable active fighters.
Mayweather famously retired unbeaten despite taking on a wide array of champions and top names across his decorated career.
‘Pretty Boy’ fought 50 times and won each bout – 27 by knockout – and since retiring has continued to be involved in exhibition matches, with the latest reportedly set to be a rematch of his high-profile battle with Manny Pacquiao originally back in 2015.
Now, speaking to InsideFighting, Mayweather has spoken on who he thinks are the three biggest stars of the sport while walking through a shopping mall with Ryan Garcia.
“There are some heavy hitters in the game right now but there’s only really three. Canelo [Alvarez], Ryan and Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis.”
Mayweather then got into what makes a star in his eyes.
“A lot of time people think well I got a belt. I’m a star. I got two belts. In today’s time, they think belts and a few million dollars makes you a star. But being articulate makes you a star.
Knowing when to speak and when not to speak. Everything plays a role in making you a household name, and I know this. That’s why they still talking about me. It’s been almost 30 years and the Mayweather name is always being brought up.”
Finally, Mayweather was asked when Garcia might be getting it on for a rematch of their fight in April 2023 which saw Garcia stopped by a body shot.
“Well, we’ll see, it’s up to them, That was a minor setback for a major comeback for Ryan.”
In the meantime, Garcia has been calling out Devin Haney, a man who many might also think is one of the stars of the sport. The pair are in talks for a super-lightweight clash this year.
