Floyd Mayweather confirmed his move over to mixed martial arts last week when he revealed details about training and evaluated his current skillset.
“I’m going to start soon. We are gonna start working out real soon,” confirmed Mayweather to TMZ.
“It’s probably gonna be a little difficult but it is what it is. I probably need a bit longer [than three months], even if it takes six to eight months. Whatever it takes, we wanna make sure that everything is done correctly and everything is done the right way,” answered Mayweather when asked about training MMA.
Mayweather has also revealed that he will apply for an official MMA license, most likely in Nevada.
“Not yet, not yet. Everything takes time. Eventually, we’re gonna apply for the license hoping we can fight,” said the retired boxer.
Mayweather’s MMA related posts on social media caused massive speculation about a likely one fight deal with the UFC. It was seen as just hype by fans but ‘Money’ looks to be serious about his intentions to step inside a steel cage.
Not much can be said about potential opponents. The obvious one would be Conor McGregor but so far Mayweather has not mentioned any big names, certainly not McGregor’s.
Floyd will start training with UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley very soon and is looking to sharpen his skills for the next six to eight months.
“Even if it takes 6 to 8 months — whatever it takes. We want to make sure that everything is done correctly, and everything is done the right way,” said Floyd.
“Who better than #thechosenone to train #thechamp Floyd Mayweather in the octagon?” wrote UFC champion Woodley.
