Although the main event got the whole world talking, there was one match-up on the undercard of Ryan Garcia vs. Devin Haney that resulted in what many think was a shocking scorecard that gave the wrong man victory and now an official appeal has been lodged over the decision.
It was Arnold Barboza Jr. who rather unbelievably secured a contentious split decision victory over Sean McComb during Saturday night’s super-lightweight clash.
The bout, serving as the chief support for the highly anticipated Haney versus Garcia showdown at the Barclays Centre in New York, left many fans believing McComb had done enough to claim victory as the final bell rang.
However, despite this overwhelming belief from ringside, the judges delivered a split decision in favour of Barboza. One judge scored it 98-92 in McComb’s favour, while the other two saw it differently with scores of 96-94 and 97-93 for Barboza, which left many people perplexed.
There has been a huge outcry about the result and now it has been revealed on X that a formal appeal has been made. It was McComb’s manager Lee Eaton who shared the news.
“Formal appeal/complaint lodged for my brother @sugarseantl”
This is not the first time an appeal has been lodged over a contentious decision – mostly recently the tea of Daniel Dubos did the same after they perceived him to have legitimately knocked down Oleksandr Usyk with a body shot which was ruled low.
Usyk recovered and went on to win the fight by knockout and the appeal led to nothing, which sadly is all too often the case. McComb and his team will at least be hoping that a rematch is ordered.
