Former six-division world champion, Oscar De La Hoya says there are three current ‘stars’ in boxing.
De La Hoya cemented his own name in boxing history during his time in the ring, but he has remained in the limelight since retirement, assuming the role of promoter.
De La Hoya founded Golden Boy Promotions, being a key instrument in the rise of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and recently being part of the promotion for the blockbuster clash between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia.
Canelo split from De La Hoya in 2020 after a contract dispute and has recently worked with rival promoter, Eddie Hearn, under his Matchroom banner.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, despite the recent animosity, De La Hoya still included Alvarez when naming his three stars in the sport.
“Hats off to Gervonta Davis, hats off to Ryan Garcia. Gervonta will be a star, Ryan Garcia will be his own star. So, I’m glad that now we have two stars in the sport along with Canelo. Boxing is on the rise again, boxing is alive and well, boxing is bigger than ever.”
With Garcia signed to Golden Boy, it is no surprise to see his name make the list.
The third name was Garcia’s last opponent, Gervonta Davis. Davis beat Garcia with a body shot in a fight where many said the victor would become the ‘face of boxing’.
Whether ‘Tank’ is a bigger star than Canelo is up for debate, but he’s certainly one of the hottest properties in the sport and competes in a division littered with talent including Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney and Vasiliy Lomachenko
