Former super-lightweight world champion Regis Prograis has explained why he feels that Devin Haney’s shock defeat to Ryan Garcia at the weekend was ‘karma’, after he lost his WBC title to ‘The Dream’ back in December.
Haney dominated ‘Rougarou’ from the opening bell, scoring a whitewash win to dethrone his fellow American. However, much of the talk in the aftermath was about how Haney managed to pile on 20lbs between the weigh-in and fight night, aiding the one-sided display.
Meanwhile, Garcia weighed in three pounds over the super-lightweight limit on Friday and was forced to pay the champion a substantial fee. Yet on fight night, it was Garcia who assumed control and scored three knockdowns to hand Haney his first loss.
Speaking to FightHype, Prograis saw the irony in Haney’s defeat to Garcia and declared that ‘The Dream’ broke the terms of their fight contract when they met four months ago.
“There were rumours that he did I.V. drips and that type of s**t. At what we fought at [140lbs], you are not supposed to come in that big, so that is illegal too.
“Ryan did the same thing to him, that he [Devin] did to me. For me, I just think that it is all karma, that is what happens. I am never one to complain about it, I felt like this was going to happen or something [similar].
“Karma comes around for everybody, that is just how it is, you can’t get away from karma. You do good, you do bad – whatever it is – karma is going to happen.
“In my [fight] contract, it was illegal. You can’t do that, in the contract [it said that] you can’t put that much weight on, when he [Haney] fought me.”
