The dramatic life and times of Ryan Garcia continue to throw out many surprises and now the embattled fighter has called out a shock new opponent in his latest social media outburst.
Garcia is never far from the headlines, and that has been the case all year. After a hugely controversial build-up to his fight with Devin Haney in which many thought he was exhibiting signs of a mental breakdown, he shocked everybodu with a win.
The American put Haney down three times in his title for the WBC world super lightweight title but failed to go home with the belt after not making weight and coming in more than 3 lbs over the agreed limit.
Since the contest, news broke that he failed a drug test before and after the fight. Although he has claimed his innocence, he is now awaiting the B-sample to be tested, with a day of May 22 set for that to happen. Haney, for his part, has revealed that he wants to have his loss overturned and that he wants to be awarded the victory.
In the meantime, a new post on X shows Garcia to have called out none other than former super-middlweight turned light heavyweight David Benavidez. The American has screenshotted the post and added it to his own Instagram with a message.
“@kingryan send the contract. I’ll go down to 144”
It seems hugely unlikely this fight will happen given the vast size difference between the two men, although with the likes of Jake Paul and Mike Tyson and Francis Ngannou versus first Tyson Fury and then Anthony Joshua having happened recently, nothing is really off the cards in the sport right now.
Both men have plenty of hurdles to climb before any further discussions can be started: Garcia must clear his name, and Benavidez has a fight coming up against Oleksandr Gvozdyk on June 15.
Should he come through that, many people would still love to see him fight undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez if a deal could be made and a suitable weight agreed upon.
