Ryan Garcia has broken his silence on the potential fight between him and Maxi Hughes.
It is widely known that the pair have exchanged messages about a future clash.
Garcia, promoted by Golden Boy, is undefeated and was last seen in the ring just last month when he stopped former world champion Javier Fortuna inside six rounds at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
Hughes, from Rossington in England, is the current IBO champion at lightweight and has been very vocal about the fact that he has had discussions with the 24-year-old, with the pair exchanging direct messages on Instagram.
Hughes told Boxing Social recently:
“Ryan speaks to me personally, so I know what he’s saying is coming from his mouth.
“He wants it and he’s got no other reason to message me and ask me to fight.”
And Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) has taken to twitter to clarify his reasons behind those talks:
“I just wanted to clear the air on Maxi Hughes.
“I wanted to keep active so I asked if he wanted to fight before I fight Gervonta [Davis], but [the] team said that wasn’t possible.”
I just wanted to clear the air on Maxi Hughes I wanted to keep active so I asked if he wanted to fight before I fight gervonta but team said that wasn’t possible. Staying in the ring is good for me and i didn’t want to wait that long that’s where my head was.

Hughes (25-5-2, 6 KOs) has agreed terms to fight Kid Galahad, the former IBF featherweight world champion who was knocked out at the Utilita Arena in Sheffield last November by Spain’s Kiko Martinez.
If that fight materialises, it will take place on November 24 at the Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, exclusively live on DAZN, on a card headlined by WBA ‘regular’ featherweight champion Leigh Wood.
Garcia has long chased down a showdown with ‘Tank’ Davis, whose promoter Floyd Mayweather stated that the fight could happen as long as it was at the lightweight limit of 135 pounds after ‘King Ry’s’ last outing was up at super-lightweight, and it now seems that is the number one target going forward.
He has reportedly instructed his team, according to ESPN’s Mike Coppinger, to make that fight next, with it being stated that he is “optimistic” of the clash being agreed for a date before the end of the year.
