After a few weeks of waiting, there has finally been a big update on Ryan Garcia’s B-sample following his positive drugs test.
Garcia is one of the most talked about men in boxing right now. The controversial figure has been on a true roller coaster ride this year.
It started with a wild build-up to his fight with Devin Haney in which he behaved hugely erratically, made all sorts of crazy accusations, complained about many different things and then ended up coming more than 3lbs overweight for the world title shot in Brooklyn.
Come fight night he put in the performance of his life and managed to hurt Haney early before then putting him on the canvas three more times. He took the points win come the final bell but was ineligible to claim the WBC super-lightweight title that was on the line because of being overweight.
After stunning the world and turning public opinion in his favour, it then emerged that he failed drug tests both before and after the fight on April 20. He tested positive for the banned substance ostarine although he vehemently denied any wrongdoing.
For his part, Haney has petitioned the New York State Athletic Commission to reverse the decision from the fight at the Barclays Center and wants Garcia disqualified and for him to be given the win on his record.
Although his B-sample was opened yesterday, a message on X by boxing writer Dan Rafael suggests we won’t hear about them for a few days due to the Memorial Day weekend.
“Per source, Ryan Garcia’s B sample was opened today with his representative on hand to observe. Will take at least couple of days for results but certainly possible it could stretch into early next week due to the weekend & holiday. I’ll let ya know when they’re in. #boxing”
For now, then, the saga will roll on and Garcia will no doubt continue to make headlines. His behaviour since the initial news broke has not enamoured some, including Eddie Hearn who recently slammed Garcia’s actions.
